Our Family History
May 5, 1892 John H. Enders opened a furniture house and undertaking business in the "Sprinkle Building" on East Main. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Embalming in June, 1896. In 1900 he organized the Berryville Volunteer Fire Company and was known as Captain John until his death in 1933. The company was then named the John H. Enders Fire Company in his honor.
After WWI Charles J. Enders, Sr. joined his father in the business. He was a 1919 graduate of the Renouard Training School for Embalmers in New York. His son Charles J. Enders, Jr. later joined him and was active until his health failed. Charles, Sr. was active until the mid 1970's when he sold the business to his step-son Reginald K. Shirley.
Reginald K. Shirley, "Reggie" serves as President of the firm and is a 1971 graduate of the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science. He is a member of the John H. Enders Fire Company and Rescue Squad. He lives in Clarke County with his wife Kathy and their children Abbey and Aaron. Reggie and Kathy are active members of Fellowship Bible Church.
In 1984, R. K. Shirley, III, joined the firm. He graduated in August,1987 from Mid-America College of Mortuary Science. R. K. presently serves as Senior Vice President responsible for management and family services. He and his family are members of the Greenway Spirit and Word Fellowship Church in Stephens City. He lives in Stephens City with his wife Kim and their daughters, Rachael, Kelsey and Sadie. Kim serves as office manager and bookkeeper.
In 1985 a crematory and monument display were made available as additional services.
In February 1987 a branch location was opened in Stephens City in the former Samsell Brothers Funeral Home location on Main Street.
In 1991 Steven A. Shirley joined the firm and presently serves as Vice President, responsible for property management and monument designs. He lives in Clarke County with his wife Leea and son Riley. Steven is a member of the John H. Enders Fire Company.
Eleanor D. Shirley serves as secretary and treasurer. Eleanor is a member of the Berryville Presbyterian Church and lives in Berryville. She has retired from her every day activity in the office but is available to help when needed.
Ron Sheckels is a valued member of our staff and family. He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer. Ron with his wife Sally and daughter Nikki live in Berryville. They attend the Abundant Life Christian Center in Stephens City. Sally also helps us as substitute organist and receptionist.
The Shirley name was added to Enders prior to opening their new facility on May 19, 1997 at 1050 West Main Street (Business Rt. 7 & By-pass Rt. 7), Berryville. The new home is situated on 8 acreas and offers a very warm, home like atmosphere that is conveniently located for area families. The firm is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Virginia Funeral Directors Association, the Association of Independent Funeral Homes of Virginia, the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) and Top of Virginia Regional Chamber of Clarke-Frederick-Winchester.

Associate Staff Members
Mildred Keating is the staff organist. She and husband Tommy live in Berryville and are members of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.
Jesse Fleming is an assistant to our directors. He and his wife Joyce live in Stephenson and are members of Keystone Baptist Church.
Barbara Morris is a receptionist assisting families and visitors during evening visitations. Barbara lives in Clarke County and is a member of Berryville Baptist Church.
Fred Sheckels is an assistant to our directors. He and his wife Vera live in Berryville and attend the Abundant Life Christian Center in Stephens City.
